First report of Zaprionus indianus in Hungary

In October 2023, during a monitoring campaign to detect the presence of Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae – EPPO A2 List) in Hungaryone female and four male specimens of Zaprionus indianus (Diptera: Drosophilidae – formerly EPPO Alert List) were found in bait traps in two neighbouring sweet cherry (Prunus avium) orchards in the town of Érd, Pest county. No specimens were found during 2024. The authors consider that Z. indianus is unlikely to establish in Hungary due to the country’s cold winters and suggest that this finding was a transient occurrence of Z. indianus in Hungary.

The situation of Zaprionus indianus in Hungary can be described as: Transient.
