First report of Bretziella fagacearum in Canada
In June 2023, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) confirmed the presence of Bretziella fagacearum (EPPO A1 List – oak wilt) in oak trees (Quercus spp.) in an urban area in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. In the infected property, restrictions on the movements of plant material have been put in place and a delimiting survey will be carried out. In addition, an eradication plan is being developed by CFIA. This is the first time that
B. fagacearum is reported from Canada. So far, it was only known to occur in the Eastern USA.
The pest status of Bretziella fagacearum in Canada is officially declared as: Present but not widely distributed and under official control.
