Helminthosporium maydis eradicated from Yugoslavia

According to a formal statement sent to EPPO on 17 June 1976 from Mr Srboljub Todorovic, the Southern Corn Leaf Blight pathogen is no longer present in Yugoslavia.

Following its discovery in 1970 (Ref. 4/71 - 345 RSE) strict measures were undertaken, including destruction of all maize plants in the quarantine field at Rugvica near Zagreb, exclusion of the use of male-sterile lines and, each year, a seed approval scheme throughout the country.

Since this initial report on occurrence, the fungus has not been discovered again in any part of the country and is therefore considered as eradicated from Yugoslavia.
