Report on New Host of Hirschmanniella oryzae and new localities of H. oryzae and H. gracilis
A new host of Hirschmanniella oryzae (Soltwedel 1889) Luc and Goodey 1963 and new localities of H. oryzae and H. gracilis (De Mann 1880) Luc and Goodey 1963
The analysis of the root system of a rhizomatous araceous Cryptocorine introduced from the Far East (India and Malaysia), but grown everywhere in the world as an ornamental plant in lakes and aquariums, revealed the presence of H.oryzae.
The National Laboratory for Nematological analyses of CNIH, which revealed the infestation, estimated that there were 140 individuals per gram of rhizome.
The infested plants were stunted and showed a pronounced yellowing.
This is the first time that this species has been found in France and probably in Europe.
H.gracilis has been discovered in low numbers in a soil sample brought from the edge of a lagoon in the Landes (South-west of France) where the vegetation consists mainly of Alnus glutinosa and Salix cinerea. The host(s) of the nematode is (are) not yet known.
This species has already been reported in many European countries : Holland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Roumania, and in addition in North America.
