A2 mating type of Phytophthora infestans

The A2 mating type of Phytophthora infestans discovered in Egypt
Sexual reproduction in Europe is now a possibility

D.S. Shaw et al, University College of North Wales, report that Phytophthora infestans from blighted potato tubers imported from Egypt and on sale to the public in North Wales were all of the A2 mating type formerly thought to be confined to Mexico. Egyptian and British isolates of P. infestans are sexually compatible and give rise to highly viable and variable progeny.

Strains of Phytophthora infestans from Switzerland with A2 mating type behavior

According to H. Hohl and K. Iselin, Transactions of the British Mycological Society (1984) 83 (3) 529-530, the A2 mating type of P. infestans has been recorded on potato from two Switzerland locations. These observations suggest that the sexual cycle of P. infestans may operate in potato growing areas outside Mexico.
