Status of Opogona sacchari in EPPO region

The Secretariat obtained answers from 16 countries (AT, BE, CS, DE, DK, FI, FR, GB, GR, HU, IE, JS, LU, NL, NO, PT) which break down as follows:

  • Never recorded: 8 countries (AT, CS, HU, IE, JS, LU, NO, PT)

  • Intercepted in imports only: 1 country (BE). Belgium noted that the pest was intercepted in imports of Dracaena and Sanseveria from·the tropics and that special measures were taken at the national level.

  • Outbreaks occurred, but now eradicated: 5 countries (DE, FI, FR, GB, GR). France noted that it had been recently intercepted on imports, and that the last outbreak had occurred in 1980 under glass, but had since been eradicated with subsequent strict measures being taken. FRG noted that a few outbreaks had occurred under glass and been eradicated. Finland noted that the pest was very common in imported Yucca and Dracaena and that the larvae were difficult to detect. Outbreaks occurred in at least 2 cases under glass, but were eradicated. The United-Kingdom noted that the last outbreak had occurred in 1982 and the last interception in 1986.
Occasional interceptions on ginger and ware potatoes were felt to present a low risk of introduction.

  • Locally established: 2 countries (DK, NL). The Netherlands noted that the pest was sometimes found and that domestic control measures were maintained against it.

Further information* indicated that the pest was fairly widespread in Italy. The EPPO Working Party on Phytosanitary Regulations has recommended on the basis of this information that 0. sacchari should be transferred to the EPPO A2 List.
