Fruits Flies in the U.S.A.

The US Department of Agriculture continues its programme of monitoring introductions of fruit fly species into the country. Jackson and McPhail traps are distributed throughout high risk areas and appropriate action is taken if finds are made. In July 1988 six specimens of Ceratitis capitata were found in Jackson traps in Los Angeles County, California. An aerial spray of malathion was applied, followed by the release of c.·350 million sterile flies.
Small numbers of specimen of Anasptrepha ludens and Dacus dorsalis were also trapped during 1988 in California. Trap density was increased around the find sites but no eradicatory action was taken.
