Non-occurrence of Ceratitis capitata in the Federal Republic of Germany

Ceratitis capitata has only been found in FRG a few times in the close vicinity of fruit markets. Natural populations have never built up. It may be noted that occurrence of C. capitata is closely linked to Mediterranean climatic conditions and therefore the organism does not find favourable development conditions in the Federal Republic of Germany. In addition, peach, the main host, has almost disappeared from German orchards.

Hibernating individuals of C. capitata are not adapted to the phenological characteristics of available hosts and in the following spring they do not survive due to a lack of suitable fruits.

It should be noted that the latest version of the CIE Distribution Map n°1 for Ceratitis capitata still indicates the presence of this pest in the Federal Republic of Germany. In line with the above, this version should be considered out-of-date. The same applies to the Data Sheet on C. capitata.
