Rediscovery or Synchytrium endobioticum in Maryland (US)
S. endobioticum (EPPO A2 List) previously occurred in USA in small areas of Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Maryland. It was thought to have been eradicated by 1974. In late 1987, a survey of the original quarantine area identified one garden suspected of still harboring the pathogen. Soil samples contained an estimated inoculum density of 160 resting sporangia kg-1 soil, but preliminary bioassays for spore viability were negative.
