Control of peach MLOs in USA

Control of peach yellows MLO (EPPO Al List) requires removal of diseased trees and control of the insect vector. In Eastern USA and in Washington State, control of peach X disease MLO (EPPO Al List) can be achieved by eradicating the wild host chokecherry (Prunus virginiana). In California, removal of infected cherry trees increased incidence of X disease in adjacent orchards. Leaf hoppers trapped on these trees were found to contain the MLO by DNA probing. Vector control is therefore needed in California (J. K. Uyemoto &. B.C. Kirkpatrick, USDA/ ARS and Univ. of California, Davis abstract P. IX-2-111).
