Distribution of Xylella fastidiosa

Forms of X. fastidiosa (EPPO Al List) cause plum leaf scald and phony peach diseases (the form causing the latter remaining for the time being a separate Al List entry). In southeast USA, the two diseases are found in the same areas. In South America, plum leaf scald is reported in many areas where Prunus salicina is grown but phony disease of peach is not known. The significance of this for the geographical distribution of forms of X. fastidiosa remains to be worked out (W. J. French et al., University of Florida, US; abstract P. II-2-46).
