Beet necrotic yellow vein furovirus (BKYVV)

Monoclonal antibodies against BNYVV (EPPO A2 List) have now been produced (P.M. Boonekamp et al., Washington, NL; abstract P. I-1-16). A special workshop on rhizomania heard about many aspects of the disease in Japan: distribution, yield loss and diagnosis; T. Tamada & H. Abe, Hokkaido Central Agricultural Experiment Station, Naganuma, Hokkaido 069-13; abstract 1); control (H. Abe et al., same address; abstract 9). A method of screening for resistance was presented (H. Paul et al., Wageningen, NL; abstract 11). Studies in California and Texas (US) have shown that several other viruses occur in beet resembling BNYVV morphologically and vectored by Polymyxa betae, but differing in host range, symptoms and serology (J.E. Duffers, USDA/ARS, Salinas, California; abstract 3). Various papers on the biology of Polymyxa betae, the vector of BNYVV, were also presented.
