First record of Thrips palmi in Florida (USA)

Thrips palmi (EPPO A2 organism) has been found for the first time in the continental USA. In 1991-02 heavy infestations of the pest have been detected on potatoes, aubergine, capsicum, green and pole beans, courgette, yellow squash and several weeds in the Homestead area of the Dade county. The source of the infestation has not been identified yet.
Experts in Florida expressed doubt about the possibilities of eradicating the organism and believe that the it will spread further.

The findings of T. palmi in Florida have been confirmed by the USDA.
