Survival of Thrips palmi in winter
Observations on weeds infected by Thrips palmi (EPPO A1 list) indicated that T. palmi can survive temperatures as low as -3 to -7° C.
Weeds of Vicia sativa, Cerastium glomeratum and Capsella bursa-pastoris were used as winter hosts by T. palmi in an unheated greenhouse in Japan.
On V. sativa, infestations of larvae and adults were continuously observed until mid-February and mid-March respectively. Under temperatures as low as -3 to -7° C no reduction of the adult population density was observed on V. sativa.
