Synchytrium endobioticum detected in Prince Edward Island, Canada


The occurrence of Synchytrium endobioticum (EPPO A2 List) has been confirmed by the NPPO of Canada in Prince Edward Island in November 2007. The fungus was found in a single potato field (18.2 ha) intended for processing. All harvested potatoes were processed or destroyed and all equipment was cleaned and disinfected. In order to prevent any further spread, restrictions were imposed on the movement of equipment and material from the infected field. In Canada, S. endobioticum has been reported from Newfoundland and occasionally from Prince Edward Island (see EPPO RS 2000/167 and 2002/144).
The pest status of Synchytrium endobioticum in Canada is officially declared as follows: Present, only in some areas (Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island), and subject to official control.
