Notes

Iran, where it was domesticated in ancient times. Cultivated for its green seeds, which are also germinated to produce "bean sprouts". Introduced to eastern Europe, Central Asia, India, Indochina (except Cambodia), Malesia (Malaya, Java, Philippines), China (including Tibet, Taiwan), tropical Africa, Madagascar, Central America, Peru, New Guinea, Australia. Many common names refer to the word "mung", which properly belongs to the related Vigna mungo (q.v.); in practice, the common names overlap.
