According to Karadjova et al. (2013), T. absoluta was first found during routine inspections in summer 2009: in field and greenhouse tomatoes in the town of Rakovski and the village of Parvenets (near Plovdiv), in field tomatoes in the village of Yunatsite (near Pazarzhik), and in a warehouse of a vegetable market in Sofia. in 2010, the pest was also found near Blagoevgrad. Then the pest continued to spread in the Southwestern region, and was also detected in some greenhouses in Eastern and Northern Bulgaria.
